Student Employment Policies and Procedures

Student Employment Hours

During the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters), students are allowed to work up to 15 hours a week. If a student has more than one on-campus position, they can only 15 hours total between each position.¬†Under special circumstance, students can be given permission to work 20 hours per week — please contact the Career Center for more details.

During semester breaks (Winter, Spring, and Summer break), students are allowed to work up to 35 hours an week.

Any student working more than 5 hours consecutively will take a minimum 30 minute unpaid break that must be reflected on their timesheet. Employers should discuss this policy with any student workers working for more than 6 hours prior to their start date. All employers need to review this policy at the time of hire.

Student Pay Rates

TCNJ student employees are paid hourly. Their pay rate is determined by the job level. For more information, view our Student Pay Scale Chart.

Direct Deposit

All student employees at TCNJ are required to sign up for direct deposit through the payroll office. Paychecks are deposited every two weeks. Student employees are required to fill and submit their own timesheet on the YESS job system. Information on how do so can be found here.

Sick Leave Policy

As of October 29, 2018, TCNJ student employees are able to accrue earned sick leave time. Refer to TCNJ’s Earned Sick Leave FAQ and the Department of Labor’s Earned Sick Leave FAQ for more information.
